Even if Valve banned them from playing CS:GO, they’d still be able to sell or trade the items. "Lmao this what all y’all get for hating on blockchain and NFTs,” tweeted HBA, the pseudonymous founder of Ethereum NFT collection, Fishy Fam.Įssentially, the argument here is that if CS:GO skins were NFTs-blockchain tokens that can represent in-game items and be traded freely across marketplaces-then the skin owners would have full control over their assets. “Web3 fixes this” has been a common response to tweets about the CS:GO bans. Are NFTs the answer?Īs with past examples of centralized, “Web2” games banning users and effectively stripping them of access to their owned digital items, Web3 enthusiasts took this as an opportunity to argue that NFTs would solve such dilemmas. It’s also a site that offers up CS:GO-themed gambling games, as powered by a decentralized app (dapp) built on the EOS blockchain. The banned accounts were allegedly part of a “supplier program” for CSGORoll, a third-party marketplace that lets players trade skins. The latest set of bans comes just over a month after a previous wave of CS:GO skin traders were banned after gambling site links were found. The skins for items like guns, knives, and gloves will remain lost to the owners and wider CS:GO community so long as the bans remain intact. Reports from gaming websites like Dexerto and Dot Esports suggest that over $2 million worth of in-game CS:GO skins are now permanently inaccessible, as they were tied to the banned accounts. ![]() It's not a guaranteed solution, but it's worth a shot!Īs we've already discussed, VPNs slow your connection down because they're encrypting your traffic and sending it on a longer route through to the internet. If you're using the OpenVPN protocol, switching TCP to UDP protocol could secure you faster speeds. ![]() That'll let you know if it really is your connection or if you happen to have a problem with that specific server. You should definitely have a mess around with your VPN's configuration settings first, as this might solve your problem.įirst things first, try connecting to a different server to the one you're experiencing slow speeds on. If you already have a VPN and you're feeling like it's way to slow to be worth the trouble, don't make any drastic decisions just yet. Configuring your VPN settings for optimal speed Check out our fastest VPN page for more information and a full list of other the fastest services. This way, you can choose a VPN that will have the least impact on speeds.Īdmittedly, the order of these providers does change but the same ones – NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Ivacy, Surfshark etc – are almost always near the top. We run regular VPN speed tests on a list of top VPN providers so we can provide our readers with up-to-date information on who's the fastest. This means they can't throttle your bandwidth because, essentially, they don't know what you're using it for. With a VPN, however, your ISP can't see what kind of traffic you're creating, because it's all encrypted. It's a reactive measure usually deployed at individuals using a lot of bandwidth or a specific type of traffic that a number of devices on the network are creating. You can use a VPN to check if your ISP is doing you dirtyīandwidth throttling is when an internet service provider decides to purposefully slow down their network to minimize congestion. If your internet service provider is currently throttling your bandwidth (a practice that, surprisingly, is called 'bandwidth throttling) then switching to a VPN could be a good shout. There is perhaps one situation where a VPN could actually improve the speed of your connection. When you're judging or comparing VPN speeds, it's all about how minimal the impact on the speeds you'd be experiencing if there was no VPN in the picture. ![]() The best VPN providers have such slickly run networks that use the most up-to-date servers, creating a network that has a negligible, insignificant impact on your speed. You might be wondering why so many VPN companies – and sites like ProPrivacy – refer to VPNs are 'fast' or 'quick' when, as we covered above, they can't help but slow your connection down a little bit. What does it mean to say a VPN service is 'fast'? This issue is unlikely to affect a premium provider like ExpressVPN or Surfshark with their state-of-the-art server infrastructure, however, but is something that might happen if you use a free VPN. Similarly, congested VPN servers can lead to sluggish speeds. If there's a massive basketball game in the US and everyone wants to connect to a US server to try to watch it, the servers will struggle to accommodate good connections for everyone. Other reasons include the fact that VPNs use extremely robust encryption standards (most providers these days use AES-256, which the US government and military use to secure classified data) which, because of the simple fact encryption takes time, is another reason you might experience a slight loss of speed. The extra steps in between your device and the internet mean it's inevitably going to take more time These extra steps mean it's inevitable it takes more time. This is plain to see when you connect to a server in a completely different part of the world – even though most things are instantaneous nowadays, it's still a much, much longer distance. But in order to provide these, the one downside of a virtual private network is that they send the data and requests from your device on a longer physical route before it gets to the internet. The path your traffic takes is shown in the diagram below: In order to do this, VPN providers funnel all user traffic through an encrypted tunnel to a private server before it reaches the internet. VPNs are used to create more private browsing experiences via the masking of IP addresses. To understand why VPNs slow down your internet, we first need to get to grips with what happens when you connect to a VPN. This condition is sometimes combined with other symptoms like redness and light sensitivity. Eye pain can likely be described by the following. This occurs when blood vessels or an artery wall in the brain are weak, resulting in possible hemorrhaging or stroke. When pain is felt specifically behind the left eye, it could possibly indicate a brain aneurysm. And when pressure increases in your eye, it can lead to pain oftentimes coupled with nausea, swollen eyelids, watery eyes, and loss of peripheral vision. This condition is caused by the buildup of intraocular pressure.Throbbing pain from a migraine headache almost always includes pain behind the eyes. Also referred to as sinusitis, sinus inflammation causes pressure and pain behind your eyes and tenderness in the front of your face. That’s because your brain and eyes are trying to compensate for your compromised vision. If you have a tendency to focus or squint to make up for a vision problem like farsightedness, nearsightedness, or astigmatism, you are more prone to develop eye pain. Dry eyes can bring on sensitivity to light and headaches, both of which can be painful and lead to pain behind your eyes. Dry eye syndrome is a relatively common condition in which your eyes are unable to produce adequate tears to moisten the eye. Here are some common reasons associated with pain behind your eye. ![]() ![]() That’s why it’s important to figure out what’s most likely causing your eye pain. Most often, pain behind your eye isn’t a serious condition, but in some instances, it can be. It can range from dull to intense and can be sometimes be accompanied by fever, tearing, redness, light sensitivity, sinus pressure, double vision, and numbness. When this condition occurs, granules of pigment break loose from the iris and obstruct one or more channels. Pigment dispersion syndrome can similarly cause accumulation of drainage-blocking particles in the eye. In addition, ocular hypertension may suddenly appear with the onset of other eye conditions, such as pseudoexfoliation syndrome, a condition related to age and genetics in which small protein fibers accumulate, clump together and block the free flow of fluid within the eye. ![]() Use of steroids, including steroid eye drops that are sometimes prescribed after eye surgery, is also linked to elevated pressure within the eye. African Americans also have a statistically higher risk. You are at greater risk for developing ocular hypertension is you are over 40, have thin corneas or a family history of glaucoma. This system can also be disrupted by an injury to the eye (e.g., a sports injury or car accident) that damages those vital drainage channels, setting in motion the increase in pressure. In many cases, there is no observable damage to the release channels, yet the natural system of drainage unexpectedly stops working. Once that happens, internal pressure rises, and major damage to the optic nerve can result. Pressure builds as the eye creates new fluid and the channels which normally drain the aqueous humor become obstructed or damaged. The cause of elevated eye pressure, known as ocular hypertension, is an imbalance in production and drainage of aqueous humor, the fluid inside your eye. It is often the first sign that you may be developing glaucoma, a leading cause of blindness.īelow, experienced Bay Area ophthalmologist Mark Mandel, MD, discusses prevention and treatment strategies for this serious condition. Elevated eye pressure can occur without symptoms, and is as dangerous to your eyes as high blood pressure is to your organs. Regularly checking your eye pressure is an important way you can help preserve your vision for a lifetime. ![]() The end result of these two lines of code is that Praat now has the names of the two files you highlighted. The second line does the exact same thing, but it looks saves the name of the TextGrid instead. My Sound file is called “Joey”, so now the variable thisSound$ contains the string “ Joey”. The dollar sign at the end of that variable name means that the variable contains text rather than a number (in computer circles, text is often called “strings,” as in a string of characters). ![]() This name is then stored in a variable called thisSound$. What the first line does is it tells Praat to look at whatever Sound file is selected and extract its name. First off, it doesn’t even know what files to work with! We can tell it to work with the Sound and TextGrid files that are already loaded by putting in these lines of code into your Praat script: thisSound$ = selected$( "Sound") Extracting the names of Praat objectsīefore we can do any of that, Praat needs to figure out a few things. Now we “just” need to translate that into Praat’s scripting language. Save those formants into some file so I can use it later (in R or something).Extract formant measurements at that midpoint.Go through each phoneme in your TextGrid. To accomplish this task, there are the steps I’ll take: The goal is to turn this phoneme-level transcription and accompanying audio into a spreadsheet of formants. Let’s pause for a second and think about what the script is going to do. Once you’ve done that create a script by going to Praat > New Praat Script.Ī blank window should open up for you to write your script in. Note that if you want to extract formants, you should load it in as a Sound file and not as a LongSound. There are ways to load files in automatically through scripting-which is useful if you need to process many files-but we’ll keep it simple for now. To get started, open Praat and load your Sound file and TextGrid. I’m going to assume you’ve used DARLA or FAVE to process your files so they should look like mine does. The important part to note is that I have the word-level transcription in the second tier, and a phoneme-level transcription-in ARPABET-in the first tier. I did the word-level transcription by hand (including boundaries) and then I sent it off to DARLA for forced alignment. Sample dataįor this tutorial, I’ll work with a recording of myself reading a couple dozen words with the /u/ vowel that I created for something a few months ago. I explain what to do, but I barely skim the surface when it comes to why you need to do it that way (for example, I gloss over basic computer coding concepts like for loops and variables). Note, this post was written in small chunks over Christmas break with my in-laws in town and I haven’t had time to proofread it carefully. Instead of giving you a fish to feed you for a night, I’ll teach you how to fish. ![]() Instead of providing you a Praat script, I’m going to show how to write your own. I’ve been meaning to create some Praat scripting tutorials so this was a good excuse to get something going.
